Plan to a date. Pages left is total pages minus the highest end page in your log: 480 − 132 = 348. Over 29 days that is exactly 12.0 a day, shown at full precision and rounded up to a whole page. A target date that has already passed produces no pace at all — Pace says so instead.

Pages an hour. Total pages ÷ total hours: 132 pages in 6.5 hours is 20.307692 an hour, which prices the next 348 pages at 17.136364 hours. Fastest, slowest, median and the mean of the session rates sit beside the pooled figure, and the session count is printed with it, because a speed from a handful of sessions carries that sample and cannot be read as a fact.

Backlog in hours. Every to-read book priced by whichever it has: pages ÷ your pages an hour, words ÷ your words a minute, or audio hours ÷ your speed. 14 books at 6.2 hours is 86.8 hours, and at 3.5 hours a week that is 24.8 weeks. Books with none of the three are counted, named and left out of the hours total rather than filled in with an average.

Pace is a planning, scheduling and record-keeping tool for people who study, teach or sell what they know. Every figure it reports is computed by a stated formula from the times, counts, prices and thresholds YOU enter, and those thresholds are editable because they are conventions rather than laws. Where it implements a published scheme, it names the scheme and exposes its parameters: a review schedule orders your practice, it does not predict what you will remember, and a statistic computed from a small number of responses is reported with that number beside it because it cannot be read as fact.
